As part of SecondStreet.org’s ongoing research into natural resource development, we contracted Leger to conduct some public opinion research. This policy brief summarizes the results of four oil and gas industry questions that we posed to the public between March 13 -16, 2020.
The demands of certain environmental organizations to completely phase out oil and gas development and to “keep it in the ground” have been gaining in popularity. In 1993, Canada’s first private magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) clinic opened in Calgary – the Western Canada MRI Centre. Critics accused the clinic of “undermining” Canada’s public health care system and predicted negative consequences.

SecondStreet.org examined double and triple pension situations in 11 major cities across Canada, filing freedom of information requests with Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Brampton, Mississauga, Montreal and Halifax.
Canadian consumers have long been subject to artificially expensive poultry and dairy products. This is largely due to price-and-supply controls on those products, known as “supply management.” This form of protectionism and price manipulation is enabled by federal and provincial legislation. This study examines the on-the-ground effect on consumers in one easy-to-measure consumer item: milk.
SecondStreet.org hired Nanos Research to conduct some public opinion research on carbon taxes in general. This policy brief examines Canadians’ views about how carbon taxes affect businesses.
Over the past five years, many significant natural resource projects have been stalled or cancelled at least in part due to government policies. SecondStreet.org added up the construction costs for those projects and the numbers are significant.
As health care waiting lists have ballooned in Canada, more and more Canadians have endured pain, suffering and even death.
This policy brief examines some of the economic consequences from waiting lists, notably bringing to light new details on the number of Canadians travelling abroad for health care.
