- Alberta government data show 9,331 Albertans had 100 appointments with a general practitioner in 2024.
CALGARY, AB: Think tank SecondStreet.org released a Freedom of Information (FOI) response today from the Alberta government that showed 9,331 patients had 100 or more visits with a general practitioner (family doctor) in 2024. SecondStreet.org is urging the Alberta government to examine these cases more closely to assess if any of these cases represent abuse in the system.
Alberta’s total is far higher than the combined total (282) for British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba – although SecondStreet.org cautioned there may be some variations in how provinces classify appointments. Unlike the three aforementioned provinces, the Alberta government did not provide a “Top Ten” list (anonymous listing of patients with the highest number of appointments). It’s unclear how many of the Alberta cases are people with legitimate health problems versus situations where patients or doctors are abusing the system.
“Most patients and doctors are probably pretty ethical when it comes to the health system,” said SecondStreet.org President Colin Craig. “But we do hear anecdotes of both taking advantage of the system. The question is, how often is abuse happening in the system? A review could help answer that question and explain why the numbers are so much higher than other provinces. If the government does find abuse, and addresses it, it could redirect resources to those who can’t access care right now.”
