WINNIPEG, MB: Think tank SecondStreet.org and Debbie Fewster’s family provided a one-year update today after bringing Debbie’s tragic waiting list story to light in March 2025. Her family and SecondStreet.org are disappointed to see very little has changed.
In the summer of 2024, Debbie Fewster was told she needed heart surgery within three weeks but died after waiting more than two months for surgery. The Fewsters and SecondStreet.org proposed Debbie’s Law one year ago – it would require providers to inform patients (who are waiting for lifesaving treatment) of their estimated wait time and maximum recommended wait time. The Fewster family has since been told by the health system that their mother’s case was accidentally put in the long-term surgical pile when it should have been categorized as urgent.
“A year after coming forward to draw attention to the problem, very little has changed,” said Colleen Dyck, Debbie’s daughter. “We need legislation with non-negotiable requirements so that patients are informed of their estimated wait time and maximum recommended wait time. Further, there should be consequences if patients don’t receive these vital details. This is not about blaming doctors, nurses, or hospitals — it’s about accountability.”
“A patient died in the health system by accident and yet the government has shrugged its shoulders,” said SecondStreet.org President Colin Craig. “Government documents show no staff have received so much as a slap on the wrist for this tragedy. Meanwhile, the government fines people $298 if they go fishing without a license. The double standard is appalling.”
