POLICY BRIEF: Debbie’s Law ‒ A Simple Policy to Save Lives
A new report from SecondStreet.org shows how a simple health policy ‒ Debbie’s Law ‒ could save lives.
The policy is named in memory of Debbie Fewster. The Manitoba woman died waiting for life-saving heart surgery. She was told she needed the procedure within three weeks, but died after waiting two months.
But if the government had at least told Debbie it wouldn’t be able to get her surgery in time, her family would have done anything to get her care outside of the province.
So, Debbie’s family and SecondStreet.org are proposing Debbie’s Law. In short, if the government can’t provide life-saving care in time, it would at least have to inform the patient.
