- One patient in B.C. met with a general practitioner 209 times in 2024.
- Over 14,000 patients had 50 or more appointments with a GP in 2024
- SecondStreet.org encourages the government to review the cases to determine if there’s abuse occurring
BRITISH COLUMBIA: Think tank SecondStreet.org released a Freedom of Information (FOI) response today that showed the top ten users of B.C.’s health care system in 2024 when it comes to appointments with a general practitioner. The FOI response also shows a high volume of patients with more than 50 and 100 appointments with a doctor in a single year. SecondStreet.org is urging the provincial government to review the data.
“There are over 200 cases where patients had more than 100 appointments with a general practitioner in a single year,” said SecondStreet.org President Colin Craig. “In some cases, patients with unique health challenges may need more frequent appointments, but there may also be abuse by patients or health providers. One province we spoke with about their data wondered if there might even be fraud. It’s something B.C.’s government should examine more closely.”
According to Doctors of BC, an estimated 700,000 patients do not have a family doctor. If the government reviews this data, and does find abuse, it could potentially free up time and improve access for patients who don’t have family doctors.
