SecondStreet.org surveyed a number of nurses from Ontario who are choosing to work across the border in the United States. While specific reasons varied, complaints related to licensing and scheduling in Canada were common. Also, a clear majority stated that hospital equipment was superior in the U.S.
Health care staff shortages are a problem in Ontario. Perhaps a move by the province to a model resembling that of Sweden, where non-government health care facilities are allowed to operate, could go some way toward keeping nurses in the province so they can help more Ontarians.
