11% more nurses from Windsor are working in Michigan than three years ago
CALGARY, AB: A new report by SecondStreet.org estimates the number of nurses that live in Ontario (ON), but are choosing to commute across the border to work in Michigan has increased since 2023. According to responses from more than 200 nurses in Windsor, ON, availability of work and compensation are top motivating factors.
The report also found that a clear majority of nurses (68 per cent) stated that health care technology and equipment is worse in Canada than in the U.S., while a lack of autonomy over work schedule in Canada was another cause of complaint.
“It’s no secret that when nurses come out of university they usually want full-time work,” said report author Dom Lucyk. “Despite this, the Windsor hospital, and other providers in Ontario keep posting part-time jobs. As long as this continues, Ontario nurses will keep choosing to work in Michigan. If Ontario copied the Swedish model, and allowed non-profit or for-profit hospitals to enter the Ontario market, then they might offer these workers what they want.”
Key findings from the report include:
- In 2025, an estimated 2,218 nurses lived in Ontario, but commuted to Michigan for work (up from 1,887 in 2023).
- Availability of work with a preferable schedule (44%), compensation/salary (29%) and working conditions (19%) were the top reasons why Ontario-based nurses indicated they chose to work in Michigan. Understandably, as of August 13, just one out of 16 nursing jobs posted on the Windsor hospitals’ website are part-time or casual.
- An overwhelming majority (68%) said that health care technology and equipment is worse in Canada than in the United States. A mere 2% said it was better in Canada while the rest said it was equal or they did not know.
- 62 per cent of respondents indicated that working in a government-run facility was not important to them, while 50 per cent did not care whether or not they worked in a unionized environment.
