Think tank SecondStreet.org today praised the doctors in Alberta who recently documented six cases of patients dying while waiting for emergency services. Since 2020, SecondStreet.org has been releasing annual reports on patients dying on waiting lists in Canada and calling for transparency, accountability and reform.
Since 2018-19, partial government data shows over 100,876 patients have died waiting for various health care services in Canada – everything from heart surgery to knee operations.
“Doctors across Canada should do what the Alberta doctors did and start speaking out more about patients dying while waiting for treatment,” said SecondStreet.org President Colin Craig. “We know it’s been happening under Conservative, NDP and Liberal governments for decades. The more we talk about it, the more likely we’ll see reform.”
Craig noted that SecondStreet.org has traveled to Japan, Sweden and France to meet with their officials to learn about their universal health care systems and examine why their countries aren’t plagued by health care horror stories like Canada. Those countries incentivize output, waste less money on bureaucracy and aren’t as ideological when it comes to delivery of care.
“In France, Sweden and Japan, their universal public health care systems don’t have the same problem with patients dying on waiting lists,” added Craig. “We would be fools not to implement some of the changes they’ve made to improve patient care. We’re seeing some positive changes in Canada, including in Alberta, but we need to see faster reform to improve patient care.”
